Company: Juli Bolaños-Durman
The Story: During her MFA in Glass degree show at Edinburgh College of Art, Juli, originally from Costa Rica, won both the New Designers CGS Associate Prize 2013 and the Scottish Glass Society Prize for Best Glass Student at ECA Degree Show 2013. With the help of LAUNCH.ed, Juli was able to get a Tier 1 visa, and later an extension on her visa, in order to start her studio practice in the UK. Juli’s work, in addition to winning prizes, also won her a contract with a leading international art dealer and Artist in Residence positions in Jewelry and then in Glass at ECA.
Juli specializes in, among other things, glass engraving, which has been a declining skill in the UK. Juli continued to expand her practice with a 2015 grant from Creative Scotland to pursue her ‘Made-up Museum of Artefacts’ series, a new body of work inspired by precious heritage objects from historical civilizations, their craftsmanship and cultural legacy.
Juli’s work has been purchased by the Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts (MUDAC) in Lausanne, Switzerland and featured in the popular magazine ELLE Decoration, among others. After her Tier 1 visas, Juli was able to apply for and was granted a Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa, and she continues to practice in Edinburgh.
