Social enterprise business advisor

The LAUNCH.ed team is growing! We are delighted to have a new Business Advisor on board; Lorna Baird. Lorna has recently joined us as an advisor specialising in social enterprise, and is already supporting many of our clients who aspire to using their business and entrepreneurial skills to bring about social improvements.

Lorna shares her experience to date with us:

“Interest in social enterprise is at an all-time high, particularly amongst young people, so I’m really excited about the prospect of working students and staff to help them start and grow their very own social enterprise here at the University!  My love affair with social enterprise first started when I managed a new start-up called Mi-Enterprise Lothian which was all about supporting people with learning disabilities start and run their own micro business, this was followed by three amazing years at Business Gateway Edinburgh advising start up and growth social enterprises based in the city.  Just prior to joining LAUNCH.ed I was Business Support Manager for Social Investment Scotland, where I ran the Asda Social Enterprise Supplier Development Academy helping product based social enterprises like Brewgooder and Heroes Vodka to achieve national deals with the supermarket giant.  So I’ve got plenty of experience running, growing and supporting social enterprise – all of which I am keen to share with staff and students so please do get in touch!”

One example of a social enterprise which has launched with the support of LAUNCH.ed is Elpis. Elpis provides refugees with free solar-powered mobile phone charging stations, thus addressing human rights and environmental concerns, and has worked with NGOs to develop an offline platform providing vital information. Elpis recently won the Principal’s Medal for Service to their Community, which recognises University of Edinburgh staff or students who have made a significant contribution to the wider community outside of the University.
