MiAlgae have been awarded a £70K Innovate UK grant to scale-up their algal omega-3 oil production from whisky co-products. MiAlgae showed significant innovation with their project and this will allow MiAlgae to start work on the containerised portion of the pilot plant which will go on to one of the distillery sites.

Innovate UK is investing up to £15 million in innovation projects that address challenges in health and life sciences and lead to increased agri-food productivity, quality and sustainability or improved healthcare outcomes

Started by LAUNCH.ed client Douglas Martin, MiAlgae uses nutrition rich waste waters from various sources that are used to offset the costs of micro algae. The micro algae produced is rich in omegas and proteins, both of which are required for the production of livestock feeds, especially in the aquaculture and agriculture sectors.

“We are extremely grateful for the help and support we have had from Edinburgh Innovations to get us to this point. This grant is the culmination of years of hard work, through which we have been supported by Edinburgh Innovations from day one.”
