Michael Harkins, the founder of Turtle Pack, a swimming aid to remove anxiety and build confidence for those learning to swim, has won £6,500 at the Innovator Launchpad Award.
After submitting a 30 second application video, Turtle Pack was 1 of 13 finalists to make it to the public vote on Facebook where the page was viewed over 24,000 times.
They made it to the finals, along with Alex App and Hoolr. These top three finalists were interviewed by a cross-industry panel including the director of Converge Challenge; Dr Olga Kozlova, the Head of Scotland Leyton; David Kent CEO of Dog Digital Gerry McCusker and the Director of Murgitroyd; Keith Jones.
Alex App, a delivery mobile application offering point-to-point deliveries or pick-ups based on the sharing economies concept, also made it to the top three but unfortunately just missed out.
As the head teacher of one of the most successful swim schools in Scotland he noticed children developing a bad swimming technique when learning to swim with arm bands, floats and pool noodles. As a result Turtle Pack was designed as a fun and enjoyable swimming aid. Turtle Pack has also recently won £100,000 at the Scottish Edge Award.
As a student at Heriot-Watt Michael used Enterprise Campus to access LAUNCH.ed services. Attending several meetings with our expert business advisers and attending workshops and events Michael received help and support from the team during the early days of this starting up.
Michael commented: “Wow! It’s fantastic to win the competition. The funding will be useful at this stage of my business’s development, and the professional advice and PR help will also be valuable tools to aid Turtle Pack’s future success.”
Murgitroyd said they “…would like to congratulate the winner and thank all companies who took part in this edition of the competition. The talent we have in the UK is amazing, and we’re pleased to be able to support the start-up community in this way.”
